Research Vessel Project Announced
Detail and design for the second of two modern oceanographic research vessels (R/V) will kick off this year, with a estimated completion date of late 2014 or early 2015. Like their predecessors, including the R/V Knorr (left), these ships will provide the Navy with an asset for studying the oceanographic environment.
The 238-foot, single-hull ships will incorporate the latest technologies, including high-efficiency diesel engines, emissions controls for stack gasses, new information technology tools both for monitoring shipboard systems and for communicating with the world, and hull coatings to reduce maintenance requirements. Each vessel will operate with a crew of 20 with accommodations for 24 scientists.

A New Tool for Humanitarian Aid
An ONR-sponsored Web-based tool suite that helps first responders rapidly coordinate resources during disasters is being introduced at a University of Connecticut panel as part of a month-long rollout.
The U.S. Navy and Marine Corps are first responders to international crises, which often include humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, such as Japan’s March 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster and Haiti’s January 2010 earthquake.
